Up to the third or fourth year of life, a child should be encouraged to sleep for an hour or so before its evening meal. After this age, the pre-dinner sleep may progressively be made obsolete; but it must be called to mind, that during the whole period of childhood, more slumber is necessary than at mature age. The small child, therefore, should be put to rest every single evening between seven and eight; and if it is in good health, it will sleep soundly until the following morning.
No fixed rule, however, can be laid down in reference to the sum of hours of slumber to be targetted; for one child will always need more or less sleep than another. Regularity as to the timing of bedtime is the key issue to pay attention to. Permit nothing to impede with it, and then make sure the child sleeps without disturbance, until it rouses of its own volition on the succeeding morning, and it will have had sufficient rest.
The total amount of sleep necessary to preserve fitness differs according to the state of the body, and the overall habits of the child. Infants pass a much greater segment of their time in sleep. Toddlers generally sleep twelve to fourteen hours. The older child, usually ten. In adolescence, a third part of the twenty-four hours is spent slumbering, whilst, in old age, many do not require more than four, five, or six hours sleep per night.
It is a monstrous thing when to see a mother sacrifice her toddler's health so that she may indulge her own vanity, yet how often does this happen when it comes to the child's sleep? An evening party is called together, and the little child is kept up for hours beyond its specified time for going to bed, so that it may be exhibited, stroked, and appreciated. Its normal percentage of sleep is thus cut short, and, from the foregoing excitement, what little sleep he does attain, is piecemeal and unrefreshing, and he rises on the morrow tired.
Once awake, the child should not be allowed to lie longer in bed, but should be stimulated to arise without further ado. This is the way to encourage the habit of early rising, which thwarts many grave evils of which parents are not sufficiently aware, promotes both rational and corporeal health, and of all behaviors, is said to be the most favorable to long life.
A newborn should on no occasion be suddenly roused from sleep; it over-excites the brain, hastens the action of the heart, and, if often repeated, can have serious consequences for health. The transition from sleeping to waking should always be steady.
The bed on which the child sleeps by this stage should be a mattress. At this age a feather bed is injurious to a child's health; for the body, sinking deep into the bed, is completely concealed in feathers, and the abnormal degree of warmth thus produced diminishes the system, primarily the skin, and renders the child more disposed to the dangers of a sudden cold.
Instead of the bed being made up in the morning as soon as it is abandoned, and while still saturated with the nighttime secretions from the body, the bed-clothes should be thrown over the backs of chairs, the air mattress shaken well, and the window tossed open for several hours, so that the room is thoroughly ventilated.
Finally, it is also important not to let the infant sleep with persons who are in bad health, or who are far advanced in age; if possible, the toddler should sleep alone.
